This summer, step into the magical world of Lambe Lambe Theatre.
Join us for a series of intimate, one-to-one performances where tiny worlds come alive inside beautifully crafted miniature theatres. Each show lasts just a few minutes, but offers a unique and unforgettable experience.
Alongside the performances, there will be special events, talks, and opportunities to discover how these poetic little theatres are created.
Come along, bring your curiosity, and experience something truly special this summer.
“Described by artist Álvaro Apocalypse as “A última grande invenção do teatro de animação no mundo,” or “The last great invention of animation theatre in the world,” Teatro Lambe Lambe is a form of puppetry or shape animation that takes place inside a confined but easily transportable space, usually a box placed on a tripod that, normally, one spectator would watch at a time.
Each play or show is traditionally short, usually two to five minutes in length and a whole variety of techniques and tricks are used within these miniature theatres to offer spectators the full variety of puppet art, just on a smaller scale!”
Teatro lambe lambe was created in 1989 in Salvador Bahia, Brazil by two female artists, Ismine Lima and Denise di Santos. At this time Brazil was emerging from a strict military dictatorship where education on certain topics was considered taboo.
Both Ismine and Denise wanted to demystify child birth stories to educate families and young people that birth was a natural biological event using puppetry, and inspired by the old hooded cameras that where very popular in the 80’s in Brazil, they decided to put their show inside a box and named the art form ‘Teatro Lambe Lambe’ after the hooded camera name ‘Camera Lambe Lambe’.
The artform has spread across Brazil and South America and in recent years has spread across the globe.
Fagner Gastaldon from PuppetSoup, together with puppeteer Gaby Gespedes, and with the support of David Duffy, are actively promoting the art of Lambe Lambe Theatre through a series of talks, courses, and special events.
Together, they are helping to share this unique and intimate form of puppetry with new audiences, creating opportunities for people to experience, learn, and be inspired by these miniature worlds.
